ICLASS-91 AT NIST, WASHINGTON, DC

The Fifth International Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems, ICLASS-91, will be held July 15-18, 1991, at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland (near Washington, DC). Specially invited lectures will be presented at the beginning of each session at ICLASS-91

   Plenary Lectures:

  • "The Physics of Atomization" N. Chigier, Carnegie Mellon University
  •    Keynote Lectures:

  • "Twin-Fluid Atomization" A. Lefebvre, Purdue University
  • "Experimental and Theoretical Studies on the Structure of Fuel Sprays in Diesel Engines" H. Hiroyasu, University of Hiroshima
  • "Atomization of Liquid Metals for the Manufacture of Metal Powder and for Spray Forming" K. Bauckhage, University of Bremen
  • The full program is being sent to ILASS members with the Newsletter. Further information can be obtained from Dr Hratch G. Semerjian, Center for Chemical Technology, National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg, MD 20899, U.S.A.

    ICLASS-91 Conference

About 100 papers have been accepted for presentation at ICLASS-91 (including about 40 from the USA, 17 from Japan, 9 from Germany, 6 from France, 5 from the United Kingdom, 4 from India, 15 from Canada, China, Egypt, Korea, Israel, Italy, and Switzerland). In view of the large number of papers we will have two parallel sessions. We also have a presentation of about 50 posters. We are expecting an attendance of 300 participants with large delegations from Japan and Europe and other representatives from at least 20 countries so that the conference will be truly international.

The subject matter includes engine sprays (diesel, rocket, spark-ignition, and gas turbine engines), basic processes (with emphasis on jet and sheet disintegration and novel methods of atomization), instrumentation and diagnostics, evaporation and mass transfer, modeling, and the atomization of special liquids such as polymers, molten metals, slurries, and cryogenic liquids. Other papers cover a wide variety of applications, ranging from paint sprays to electro-aerosol deposition in human airways.

A full range of exhibits of instruments, atomizers, books, and journals will be on display.

Time will be allocated for discussion at the end of each presentation. Time for viewing of exhibits and posters will be allocated each day: 1) before the start of sessions 2) during lunch time 3) after the end of sessions.

Participants are encouraged to make reservations at the conference hotel (Marriott, Gaithersburg) which has set aside 150 rooms for early reservation. Participants should make early reservations for the conference at a reduced fee of $250. and for the Marriott hotel in order to have rooms at the conference hotel. Participants will be able to socialize with colleagues and friends at the reception on Sunday, barbecue on Tuesday, and banquet on Wednesday. We will eat lunch together each day at NIST.

Spouses, partners, and children of participants will be provided with information for visits to museums and historical sights to Washington, DC and surroundings. Group tours can be arranged by request. We look forward to welcoming you to an interesting, stimulating, and memorable ICLASS-91.

    ILASS Journal, Atomization and Sprays

Volume 1, Issue No. 1 of Atomization and Sprays was published in February 1991. Sample copies are obtainable free by writing to Taylor and Francis, Rankine Road, Basingstoke, Hants RG24 0PR, United Kingdom. Volume 1, Issue No. 2 was published in April 1991 and Issue No. 3 will be published in July 1991. Three issues of volume 1 will be on display at ICLASS-91.

ILASS members are urged to consider the journal, Atomization and Sprays, as the first choice for submission of manuscripts for publication in an archival journal. It has the advantage of being read by all experts in the field and those who are interested in learning about atomization and sprays. Three copies of manuscripts should be submitted to the editor, Dr. N. Chigier, Mechanical Engineering Department, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA, 15213, U.S.A.

Annual subscription rates are $135 for institutional libraries and $35 for ILASS members. Please make sure that your library has taken out a subscription to the journal.

    ATOMIZATION AND SPRAYS SHORT COURSE

An Atomization and Sprays short course of intensive lectures and laboratory classes will be held in Washington, D.C. immediately prior to ICLASS-91 from July 10 - 13, 1991. Lectures will be given by Drs. N. Chigier and A. Lefebvre. Inquiries should be addressed to Dr. Norman Chigier, Mechanical Engineering Department, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA 15213, U.S.A.

ILASS-92 AT THE SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES, CA.

No ILASS-Americas meeting is scheduled for 1991 because of ICLASS-91. The 5th Annual ILASS conference (1992) will be held at the Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, CA. The Conference Chairman will be Dr. C. Edwards, Combustion Research Facility, Sandia National Laboratories, Livermore, CA, 94551-0969. The Sandia Labs are well known for contributions in the areas of spray and combustion diagnostic development and application.
