ILASS-93 TO BE HELD IN WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS

The Sixth ILASS Conference on Liquid Atomization and Spray Systems will be held May 17-19, 1993, at the Worcester Marriott Hotel, Worcester, Massachusetts (phone: (508) 791-1600). A special conference rate of $69 per night is available for reservations made directly with the hotel before April 22, 1993. Indicate that you will be attending the ILASS - Americas 93 Conference to receive the reduced rate. The Worcester Marriott is in the downtown business district, five miles from the Worcester Airport and one hour from either Logan International Airport in Boston or Bradley International Airport in Hartford. Knights Limousine Service (phone (800) 822-5456) offers taxi service from Logan Airport ($23 per person for reservations made at least 2 days before arrival).

Conference Registration

The conference registration fee for ILASS Members is $150 if received before April 30, 1993 ($175 after this date). Non-members can also qualify for the reduced registration fees by joining ILASS - Americas concurrently with registering for the conference and by paying a one-time fee of $20. The registration fee includes the cost of coffee breaks, conference proceedings, and a one-year personal subscription to Atomization and Sprays, the official journal of the international ILASS organizations. Participants are also encouraged to register for the buffet dinner on Monday ($18) and the banquet on Tuesday ($25). More details about registering for the conference are available from Rick Slagle (Local Arrangements Chairman, Oxford Lasers, Inc., P.O. Box 2620, Acton, MA 01720-6620 (phone: (508) 264-9110, fax: (508) 263-2868). On-site registration will also be available at the meeting starting at 6:00 pm on Sunday, May 16, 1993.

Technical Program at ILASS-93

The technical papers to be presented at the ILASS-93 conference have been organized into six sessions: Spray Structure, Agricultural Sprays, Reciprocating Engine Sprays, Instrumentation, Atomization Processes and Spray Modeling. In addition, time has been allocated for Poster Papers and Exhibits each day of the meeting. Time has also been set aside for meetings of technical committees: 1-1/2 hours will be devoted on Monday to Fundamental subjects and 1-1/2 hours on Tuesday will be devoted to Applied and Industrial subjects. The chairmen of the Technical Committees will be contacting members of Technical Committees, suggesting topics for the agenda and programs of activities for each Committee. The current committees and Chairpersons are: Physics of Atomization (N. Chigier), Spray Combustion (C. Edwards), Spray Measurements (S. Samuelsen), Spray Modeling (J. Bellan), Agricultural Sprays (A. Hewitt), Diesel Sprays (R. Reitz), and Industrial Sprays (D. Senser).

The Technical Committees reflect the specialist interests of ILASS members. The names, Chairmen and number of Technical Committees will change with time, particularly as ILASS membership increases. A new Agricultural Sprays Committee was formed in 1992 with Andrew Hewitt, New Mexico State University, as Chairman. As a result of Dr. Hewitt's efforts there has been an increase in ILASS membership and, as noted above, there will be a separate session on Agricultural Sprays at the Conference. A new Technical Committee on Metal and Ceramic Sprays used for Coatings, Manufacturing Processes, Composites and Powder Technology is being formed by Enrique Lavernia, Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, University of California, Irvine, CA 92717-3975.

Members are strongly encouraged to take active roles in their Technical Committees, suggesting topics for discussion, writing reviews and fostering communication in each specialist area. Reports of activities should be sent to Rolf Reitz (Mechanical Engineering Department, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1500 Johnson Drive, Madison, WI 53706 (phone: (608) 262-0145 fax: (608) 262-6707) for inclusion in future Newsletters.

Invited Speakers at ILASS-93

Three speakers have been invited to present Keynote Lectures at the Worcester Conference. S. Londerville, Coen Burner Company "Spray Research for Boiler and Furnace Applications" Rolf Reitz, University of Wisconsin-Madison "Advances in Internal Combustion Engine Modeling" W.J. Dodds, General Electric Company "Spray Challenges in the Gas Turbine Industry"

Industrial Participation at ILASS-93

Recommendations were made at the ILASS-Americas-92 Conference in San Ramon to actively encourage more industrial participation in ILASS. In response to this recommendation, two of the invited keynote speakers at the ILASS-Americas-93 Conference are from the a) Boiler and Furnace and b) Gas Turbine Industries. Out of 47 papers that will be presented at ILASS-Americas-93, 15 papers are authored or co-authored by engineers from industries. Members of ILASS are urged to encourage engineers from industry to attend ILASS Conferences, become members of ILASS Technical Committees and submit papers to the Journal Atomization and Sprays.

ILASS-Americas Membership

As a direct result of the very successful ILASS Americas Conference in San Ramon in May 1992, the number of members of ILASS Americas increased from 248 in 1992 to 295 in 1993. Each ILASS member is urged to encourage colleagues, friends and students to become members by sending $20, name address, Fax and E-mail numbers to Scott Samuelsen (Director, Institute for Combustion and Propulsion Science & Technology, University of California, Irvine, CA 92717). Members who have not yet submitted Fax and E-mail numbers and information on changes of address should also send details to Scott Samuelsen.

Atomization and Sprays JOURNAL

One hundred thirty manuscripts have been submitted to Atomization and Sprays. There is a steady flow of submission of manuscripts from members, boosted by the ICLASS and ILASS Americas, Europe, Japan and Korea national conferences. All manuscripts are sent to three experts for review and for recommendations for revision or rejection . Topics include an increasingly wider spectrum, covering Theory, Analysis, Computation, Instruments, Measurements and Industrial Applications. ILASS members are encouraged to submit manuscripts and also to submit their names for reviewing of manuscripts to Norman Chigier (Carnegie Mellon University, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Schenely Park, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (phone: (412) 268-2498 fax: (412) 268-6421). Most libraries are faced with heavy reductions in their budgets for journals. In this climate, where journal subscriptions are being canceled by libraries, it is very important for the survival of the journal for members to argue the case with the librarians and library committees at their institutes and universities, to subscribe to Atomization and Sprays.

ILASS Americas 94 and 95

The Board of ILASS Americas is requesting proposals for hosting of future ILASS Americas Conferences which will be held in May, each year. Members of ILASS-Americas who are ready to volunteer hosting an ILASS-Conference, which includes making all the local arrangements, should send a proposal to Norman Chigier or Scott Samuelsen.
